I kept a large eunicid worm in my 30 gallon tank for many years. It seemed to only eat macro algae, so you never know what kind you have. Here's a photo of mine. I don't think they are ugly at all...even if they are ugly, that isn't a reason to kill something.

This is the link I was looking for. I had read this a while back. I would watch your softies etc, but I don't think you have to worry about fish/hermits Pretty cool.

Yeah, looks like a Eunicid worm. Lived in my 29 for years - then he got too big and began to devastate my snails and crabs. Also caught him chomping on several zoa varieties. He's no longer in my tank - was a buggar to get out. Lost my favorite LR piece because of it.

Eunicid. Ok in sump/fuge, not in tank. They get hungry for things you pay money for.

tim over at ABC reefs had one out of a customers tank , it was 2 feet long and stuff was dissapearing in the tank until he was spotted at night and removed ! i would think that if he isnt seen at all , why would you want such a critter in the tank and also after this one was removed the dissapearing syndrome ended instantly . lesson learned , GET HIM OUT ! but you could set up a small nano with him on display, they are quite interesting looking !

A 1992 paper on the genus Eunice listed about 220 species. Many areas have multiple species - especially coral habitats. When species overlap like that they often occupy different feeding niches so they're not competing for the same food. Not every eunicid eats corals or even other animals as Untamed found and very very few species are capable of preying on fish. If Chris' worm is in a fish-only tank I wouldn't worry about it.

In my current tank, I've seen maybe 20 eunicid worms in the past two years. None as large as my old friend was. If I've seen 20, I figure my current tank probably has hundreds.

All of the one's I've have at the moment are really, really small. So...again...unless you are some kind of real specialist, you are not going to know how large your worm might get or what it might eat.

Mine ate TONS of different corals. I tried trapping 3 different fish blaming them for nipping.....until one night I looked in the tank and saw one of those things looking back at me....

It ate, Todd's torch (highly priced and prized in our area) orange cap, purple cap, countless smaller frags, nepthia, photosynthetic gorg and even rarer photo synthetic sea fan. HAD TO GO!

It was almost 5 feet streched out. 3 feet recoiled.

munched grape cap

munched echinopora lamellosa
