Question about my fuge divider

I have a 20l for a sump. divided for skimmer-->return<--fuge. My question is I have calculated how much I will have in the return section and it is somewhere around 4.1 gallons. So I was thinking is this enough??? if not should I use like a 5" tall pc of acrylic for a divider to contain sand in the fuge and then use egg crate for the remaining 5". this would give me another gallon or so from my calculations. Or should I go with my original plan of a 10" divider w/ 1" teeth, so around 9" of water depth in the fuge. All knowing experts please give advice in which direction to go.

Christian
