I have found that my Chaeto only grew if I has a relatively high bio-load and fed frequently. When I switched to every other day feedings it just melted away. I took that as a sign I didn't need the chaeto.

What is your light cycle on the fuge? I had the same problem as you until I went with light 24hrs. Since then the cheato is booming.

Mine ate itself out because I didn't trim it to encourage new growth.

Chaeto always dies for me too.... so I no longer use it.
You might want to look into dosing Iron. I have never done this myself, but have been advised that it may help the growth of the Chaeto.
