open top tank in kitchen?
Will the fumes from cooking affect the tank? I want to put it about 6 or 7 feet from the stove, which the stove has no ventilation to the outside

I guess it depends on how you cook if you use the smoke alarm as a dinner bell like my wife, the addition of halon may be a poor choice
Should be fine, be careful with cleaning items in the kitchen.

let's just say the risks of external poisoning are probably the greatest in the kitchen.
But risk does not mean it WILL happen, you just have to play the game a little tighter. on the other hand, big + for: 1) the "a spill is no biggie, happens all the time here" factor, 2) the sink, 3) all the crap you have to steal from the kitchen to do your reefing stuff anyway is right there 4)lots more minutes of view time since that's a key area of the house 5)towels...lots and lots of towels...a whole drawer full...right there...wow!....

Really depends how and what you cook.
The other day I was making some hash browns, and added a bunch of paprika to them (( yummy )). Afterwards I noticed that some of the paprika was on the vent hood above the stove. And I am not that messy, it was just the heat causing it to rise up. I guess you could just get an acrylic sheet that fits over the tank, just place it over the tank when you are making something that could be messy/greasy.

I have a large tank in the kitchen but it has a canopy. No problems and it has been there for a little over 15 years. My stove is vented but it is rarely on (the vent).
