overflow and feeding

Just setup a sump with overflow in my tank. I feed flakes to my tangs and clowns. Question is does anyone stop their return pump and overflow when eating, so that excess flakes/foods won't get into the sump? Or do most users when feed with overflow running?

I would say what ever works best for you , I have turned my return pump off ,waited for the water to stop running back and through the over flow then restarted after feeding

Thanks for your feedback. That is what I'm doing now because I don't want to clog my pipes and sump.

I feed Hikari Marine-S to my rabbit fish, tangs, clowns, and others. The clowns don't have any problems with pulling it out of the water column. When feeding, I use a 3" plastic tube set with an end about an inch or two beneath the water surface to ensure the pellets are under water and not floating on the top (sometimes the tube needs to be wiggled to break the surface tension). My chalk bass tend to try and climb out the tube after the food...

This allows me to keep all the pumps running and not shut down the sump for feeding.

Cheers,
Ray

My tangs always preferred to eat midwater. I put my flakes in a little plastic cup, scoop up a little tank water and swirl to get them wet, then dump. That way the flakes start to sink right away.
