chiller help!

are there any small chillers that are both a chiller and a heater. This way I don't have to have both just one.

I would look into a small chiller and a seperate heater on a simple controller like a Ranco Dual or even a Neptune Aqua Controller Jr. I have seen big chiller/heater's like 1hp and bigger, but not small ones.

umm,
your in miami, not new england. i seriously doubt you casa will get that cold. i dont believe in heaters, another point of failure, cracking, stuck in on position, stray voltage etc. end of the day, there are natural swings in ocean temperatures. let your tank go. we always shoot for a holy grail temp...well i got news, the ocean temp swings are tremendous.

simple, dont get a heater IF your climate is mild/ suitable. if you live in the northeast, and you leave the house, without the heat on, then you may want a heater.

just my opinion.

Current makes a small chiller that has a plug for a heater. So it effectively controls temperature. Mine has been running a couple of years no problems

There are also fans that you can install in your sump that will chill the tank

Regardless of what you end up getting...........I agree with Mr James 100%.

I have both Ranco and AC Jr. controllers that I use (on separate tanks of course) and can heartily endorse either.

You will never regret the money you spend on a controller. Not only will it ensure you don't have heating and cooling on at the same time, they will save you from cooking your tank in the event of a heater malfunction which is more common than you think.

The current chiller has a dual temperature controller. You are not relying on the eaters thermostat.

I have an AC Jr too. The temperature probe failed in the first few months. The pH probe shortly thereafter. I realize that I was probably just very unlucky, but Neptune is the only equipment that has failed on my reef; I'm not trying to bash Neptune, but I don't trust their controllers.

I bought another AC Jr. a few months ago for a new setup and noticed that the temp probe is encased and looked odd. I contacted Curt at Neptune and he told me that this is to ensure that the probe doesn't short out as some of them have.

This is a great point. Regardless of the controller, the temp probe should be sealed before entering salt water.

Teco Seachill chillers (1/8 hp and larger) can be equipped with up to a 400 watt heater. The thermostat controls both chilling and heating to keep the temp steady. They also offer an optional UV lamp insert. I have a 1/3 hp unit for my 180. The temps in my area range from slightly below freezing in the winter to the low 110's sometimes in the summer. The chiller keeps the tank temps within 2° consistently. It also freed up a channel on my RK2 controller.

If you have a tank less then 20 gallons you can use this:

I have one on my 24 nanocube. During the so cal summer it will keep the tank steady. It will turn on the chiller, or the built in heater depending on which is needed.
