Question Garlic?? What are your experiences?

Hi Guys.

I,ve been reading up on garlic and its possible ability to help with ich.
As there really isnt any fantastic scientific data on this topic I'm wondering if any one has any stories or experiences with this.

there will always be a debate on this subject as some guys swear by it and some think its an old wives tale, as far as i know there is no actual scientific data suggesting it aids the cure of itch in any way at all,it well may aid the fish to feed as it might be a stimulant, again though no data i know of, its all about personal opinion and what works for the indivigual reefer, there is also some opinions that in large quantities it can cause liver damage in fish, not my findings though, but it has been mentioned in previous conversations and articles, as i said at the front though its a debatebly subject and comes around several times quite regually here, try archiving it theres dozens of threads about it

IME I have found no benefits or drawbacks to it. Doesn't really alter how fish respond to the food. They don't eat any differently with or without it. Doesn't seem to make any difference for me. Just my experience.

^ Hahaha

I have used it since day one. It helped alot to get a finicky Coral Beauty Angel to eat.

Whether it's luck, good healthy fish from the get-go, or the garlic....I have never had Ich (knock on wood REAL hard). I feed garlic soaked food every-other day or so.

One thing to be cautious about is using the garlic supplement too much. Don't use it at every feeding as it can be harmful to the fish.

From what ive heard is that it can help your fishes immune system. And my opinion is it does just that I dose everyday soaked into the food for about 5 mins before feeding. By having your fish healthy they can be better prepared to fight infections includeing Ich. I haven't heard of anyone using it after there fish got ich to cure it so my suggestion is that you should start dosing to help prevent it. It cost me $20 for 1 bottle of Kent Marine Garlic and I use only one to two drops a day and at this rate it may last a year so if it doesn't prove to help you how it helps me its not a huge waste of money. Hope you have as much success with Garlic as ive had the past 4 months.

Garlic does NOT help at all with immune systems. It also doesn't help with appetite, unless a certain fish is drawn to the smell. It also has no effect on Ich or the potential of a fish to get ich. It has shown to have some benefit to immune systems in freshwater fish, but all studies have shown it does absolutely nothing for saltwater fish.

Gives me gas but I love to cook with it. LOL

Now when I am out fishing the Bass will take just about anything if it is sprayed with a Garlic spray so I have to believe that it triggers some kind of feeding response, but that is fresh water and when they ar not biting at all the spray makes the difference.

I never use it cause there is absolutely no proof, documentation, data, articles anywhere that says garlic will cure ich, invoke feeding responses, or boost anything's immune system anywhere. This way I save $20/month or so in buying snake oil just cause someone says it's a cure all and doesn't have anything to back them up with.

I do use hypo in QT because there is proof, there is data, and there is documentation on the other hand.

FIRST....Garlic will NOT cure Ick...... Anyone that says that Their fish had ICK....Then they added Garlic & it went away...IS DELUSIONAL. Garlic will not take Ick away

Using Garlic.... along with the fish food will ONLY help to keep the fish Immune system up & running properly....Garlic will help to fight ick. BUT WILL NOT CURE IT

i love the stuff. i dose it in the food about 3-4 times a week. i might be "DELUSIONAL" but it seems to keep my fish nice and healthy. I dont think it cures Ich at all but helps keep their appetite up, which in turn keeps them healthier overall.

just about every LFS i go to seems to keep a bottle on hand for their use on their display tanks.

i will probably use the stuff till i die or i see some hardcore research sayin why i shouldnt use it. $14.95 for a bottle that will last me a year? what the heck, why not.

My tang got ich and stopped eating. I tried all kinds of different foods and the only thing he would eat was garlic soaked nori. I QT'd my tang in a 10 gallon tank and my reef guy gave me some Ich-X medication. I put one tables spoon of this stuff in for 10 days and did 5 gallon water changes every day for a month and he was cured. I know everybody has methods that worked for them but this is what cured mine...thank god cuz I would have be Po'd if my 125$ fish died the first week
