Water Testing
I've got a new tank, with only live sand and rock and a fish, I'll soon be moving to a new tank and eventually adding more fish and corals so...
What should I be testing in my water, and does anybody have or know of a good test kit to buy? |

http://www.reefkeeping.com/issues/2004-05/rhf/index.php A good article on the parameters and what they really are. Also, there are several good brands to buy, salifert would be one of them

ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, ph, temperature and salinity until cycled, then alk/kh, magnesium and calcium after to get params right before adding corals, as above salifert is a good choice kit, but there are several others as well

What Michael said. . .I also continue to monitor PH after the tank is cycled, because it can sometimes point to other problems or help you diagnose issues (plus, I drip kalkwasser, which can potentially have a drastic effect on PH).

LaMotte, Elos and Salifert for my taste. The first mentioned are a bit pricier, but excellently made kits with glass vials [don't etch from reagents] and reagents can be ordered separately when you run out. Reliable, consistent, and all this in a sturdy storage box. [sorry if I just gave you a picture of Billy Mays - that's likely to stay with you for the next 36 hours ]
