Would a Goby be right for me?

My sand in my 55 gets a film on the top and if left alone long enough it will get clumpy.I am assuming this is detritis build up. I have a few nassarius snails but they cant seem to keep up. I tried a sand sifting star and it starved within a week. I found out later they eat ?copepods? that my tank could not provide. I have been thinking about a Goby because I think he could keep the top layer of my sand tilled up so I dont have manualy stir it once every 3 days. Any thoughts on this cool fish? BTW, my tank is 7 months old and all numbers are on point...Thanks

Probably even better would be a goby shrimp combo. I use a hi fin goby with a tiger pistol.

goby would do the job, you can also look at fighting conchs, and sea cucumbers, or any combo of the above. i rarely see my cukes (just see where they were); but my conchs are always out and about.

Do you have an open top? If so the goby will jump out.

Thats right, I did hear they were jumpers. I will have to put some egg crate over the top if I end up getting one.

Btw, what all do they eat? Are they strickly sand sifters or will they eat frozen food?

Depends on the Goby species.

I love my goby! I got one after 3 years and he cleaned my sand bed up great! i would never not have one again. Mine also eats whatever floats by him during feeding time. They are definitely jumpers though, although i think that depends on the individual fish. My first one somehow jumped out of my fully covered tank the first week. My second one is more relaxed and doesn't streak towards the surface when startled........
