What's the verdict on UV Sterilizers?
Just wondering what peoples opinions are on uv sterilizers for a reef tank? Are they effective, necessary, a wast? Thanks for any feedback.

They I guess are ok for a couple of weeks or untill the bulb begins to get glazed over. You then have wasted your money. Invest the money in your protein skimmer and it will be not so much a waste.

UV has its place. Typically, hobbyists don't bother until there is a need. Most common use is to help control algae spores. Not everyone who uses one runs it 24/7. Most are designed for easy cleaning of the bulb. UV will kill many things in the water column, some you wish to keep.

I dont see an issue with them, like said above the will help if your algae goes sexual. I have plenty of pods etc and my corals dont seem to be lacking and I run mine 24/7.

There are submersibles with built in strainer pads to prevent the killing of pods. Doesn't do much for micro fauna tho.
Beware advice coming from bad apples. |

not a tank but we run one on the koi pond. My parents had some really bad problem with it clouding up from a bloom, put an inline UV light on the pump and it cleared up very quickly. They dont run it constantly though as it kills beneficial bacteria.

They are great for fresh water to get rid of green water! I don't plan on running one on my tank when it gets setup.

Kind of depends on what you want to do with it
I've ran one for the last year or so and I love it. I use it in line with the skimmer and it really aids in keeping the water clear in between water changes. The difference in water clarity is amazing and I've noted no ill affects from using it. I run about 400 gph through a 40 watt unit, so as far as killing any parasites mine is not set up for that, just the water clarity issue.
