Thinking about buying a filter

I'm thinking about buying a multiple media filter off of Marine Depot for use in my 85 gallon FOWLR. I was thinking about running carbon through the filter as I know it filters out a lot of contaminants and also clarifies water.

Could I run multiple media at the same time? Say for example phosban and carbon or some other combination?

What's the best overall filtration media to use in terms of water purity? Is that question isn't really answerable, would anyone mind giving me a breakdown of the different types of media and what their particular uses are?

It's fine to run multiple types of media in a canister filter. Carbon for chemical filtration( removal of organic compounds). Phosban- granular ferric oxide adsorbant for the removal of phosphates. Nitrate removers don't work in salt water.
