Protien Skimmer for 50g

Hi folks!

I'm sure there are a ton of answers to the questions, kind of like asking what the best flavor of ice cream is :P

I'm building a 50g tank with a 20g sump and am looking for a good quality in-sump skimmer. I don't need ridiculous bells and whistles, but I like to buy higher quality the first time so I don't end up re-buying later.

Any suggestions for skimmers that would be appropriate?

Thanks!

I presently use an Aqua C EV 120, which can be mounted either in or out of the sump, but previously, with a light load, I used an Aqua C Urchin. If you have nothing more demanding than LPS coral it will be fine. If you want SPS, or fish-only, you may need more skimmer than an Urchin, as I did.

An ev-120 would work great for you, I'm quite happy with my EV 180 on a 120 gallon. Some people kinda talk down on these but I have no complaints http://reefcentral.com/gallery/showp...t=1&thecat=500

If you have the money, go with a Deltec MCE600. It is a great skimmer for smaller tanks. I used one on my 50g with 20g sump and it kept it very healthy even though it was way to heavily stocked.

I use a Reef Octopus DNW-110 on my 50. It is the re-circulating model. I love mine, it is a skimming beast.

I'm not knocking anything else mind you, but I'm a big fan of AquaC and recommend the Urchin or EV-120 as well.
I also use a Tunze skimmer and like mine, but they are kind of expensive.

I second the aquaC ---I use this on a 60 gal system--35 tank/25 sump

Wow! Lots of great input. Thank you for the replies everybody

One more question: what are the benefits to drilling a sump? I'm curioius what the point is rather than having your drain pipe just dump into the tank through the top and the return pipe just pump out of the top as well.

if you drill the sump, it is usually for the return pump to be placed outside so that it does not pass the heat it produces to the water.

Check out my reef creations! I use their ocean force skimmer and it pulls an amazing amount of gunk from the water and for 300$ it is well worth it!

Id look for an Euroreef. You can find RS80's or 5-2's, 6-2's etc in the for sale forum, or by posting in the want to buy forum easily. I just got a RS80 and already have an ES 5-2 and love them both.
