Question What happens when coral grows onto a rock?

I have been thinking, and can not figure out what is done about this.

If a tank is stocked with live rock and coral (zoos, xenia etc...) then the zoos or xenia grow on the live rock, have you "lost" that piece of live rock. Meaning, has that piece of live rock, now become a piece of coral?

Is it still live rock, just with coral attached to it?

Is that piece of rock permanentlylike that after the coral grows on it?

Thank you for the info!

Live rock is essentially bacteria and organisms on the surface of the rock. Every little nook and cranny of the rock provides surface for things to grow. An encrusting coral completely covering the front of the rock may slightly reduce the available surface area for organisms and bacteria to bind, but the effects are likely marginal. If you're worried, buy 10% more live rock and throw it in the sump.
