Question CLOWN question

i have a newly RE-Set up 29g intended reef with a 20g sump BB tank.

ive had a pair of false percula clowns in there that i hae not yet re-added to the tank.

today i stopped by petco for the first time in 6 months or so and saw they had a really pretty black false percula

really got me thinking on wether i could add him as a third to the new tank at the same time with the other two or if i could just take one to a LFS and add one orange and one black.

eh....just a simple question i was wondering what others thought about this.

first thought, no way.... they will just fight. It seems kinda harsh to send a fish back to the pet store... how would you know which one to send?

thats why i figured id ask.
because i dont know...and i fiured rather than doing somehting stupid id ask someone wiser than me.

ive been thinking of it and i dont know if i could even split them up. they have been together for a year now.

i guess if i do it...might be bad karma and my woman might leave me...for...hah. ok thats really sad.

How big is the black one compared to the ones you already have?

size doesn't matter. what matters is has the black started to turn female or not. in absence of any males this can happen quickly, while they are still small.

if you want to split them up, best bet is to sell the female and put the black in with the male and let them sort it out

im not saying it is not possible to have a mix-match.. in fact i have seen it done. The issue seems to be more about breaking up old friends that are fine together.. Plus some fish are just jerks... i would say keep the pair.. I would love to buy them from you... then you could start all over and do your mix....

im fairly new to the hobby but all my fish are heathy and happy trust me if i REALLY made up my mind about it id rather give one or both to a new responsable owner rather than the LFS...

sad thing is i dont know anyone around here that would be interested because i live in a fairly small upstate NY town.

reason why i wanted the odd match was because i wanted to have the small 29g reef tank with somewhat "unique"

alex I remember your other thread, did your tank ever clear up?? I had 4 false perculas and one died, I have had the remaining 3 for about a year. The fish that lost its partner gets picked one from time to time. I feel bad for it

in a way every tank is unique but yeah i know what you mean...heyyyy look its nemo! omg and jaque the shrimp with OCD! BAH.

i own a 2006 passat...they are bigger more expensive and a bit more luxurious than jettas....yet...to someone who isnt a VW fan...they look the same... sometime i feel like flipping when someones like OH NICE JETTA!.

its like this tank...but regardless ive grow attached to the fish (which is funny because they arent as social as a dog for example)

rare fish make a tank look more expensive...but when it comes down to it...to the people that call your clowns nemo they might aswell be 5$ fish because it wont make a difference

Size doesn't matter? If the black clown at the store is very young it is more than likely asexual and it would be fine putting it with either clown he already has.

I would say keep the clowns you have even though pairing ocellaris is probably the easiest of any clownfish species.

i was just thinking that if i buy it and add it to the two i have in there one will end up eventually getting picked on.

inevitably ill end up havig to rach in for one and ill have to move the rocks or knowck them over. bah i wish you could just talk to them like people and be like

ok ...if you guys dont get along one of you is gonna have to pack your stuff and leave the tank.

As far as I know about clowns (which isn't too far), if the false percs have already established sexes (i.e. one is bigger than the other, bigger = female) and the black one is SMALLER than the female, then you can add it to your tank. Of course it will get picked on a bit at first to establish territory and hierarchy but they may just work it out.
Although as stated, it is a risk. If it doesn't work out, it's not always easy getting the clown out.

Have 3 clowns in a 29 (( or any "normal" sized tank )) is a bad idea, IMO.

In most cases a pair will be established, and the odd ball will be harassed until it dies. I have witnessed myself, before I knew better.

Well, I guess the question is, is the tank for your enjoyment or does the opinion of the people who see it and don't know what they are looking at matter that much? You could add a snowflake ocellaris, spend a couple hundred dollars on it, and have someone walk in and tell you it looks weird. Rare and expensive doesn't always make it better.

Oh, and I have VWs too. If you are into all of the aftermarket stuff, my husband has a Stage 3 Beetle that has around 300 hp. He still gets the "slow car" comments from people who don't know what is under the hood.
