What are you QTing?
Fish just need enough light so that you can see them and they can have a sense of night and day.
Corals will need more depending on the family.

I would shoot for a light that gives you enough brightness to see if the fish has issues or not.Nothing special, just bright enough.

What about SPS? How long will they need to be in there and how many watts per gallon will be okay?

To keep SPS for any length of time, you will need 40 -50 watts. I try to keep everything in QT for four weeks, although I must confess I cheat from time to time!

Can I chime in here too with a similar question? It may provide an inexpensive lighting option for a QT....
What about the 50w 6500K fluorescent bulb (not tube) that Melv's Reef recommends for a fuge. (can't find the link anymore) Would that work on corals in a QT?
