Question Mechnical Filtration for Water Polishing.

So I tried the whole filter sock method of filtering large particulate from the water column. However, I did not enjoy replacing the filter socks on a daily basis. I am considering purchasing a Fluval FX5 for the sole purpose of Mechanical Filtration. Does anyone do something different? Any recommendations would be helpful.
