If it is the common sea hare you see in reef tanks, the big brown one, then there is nothing to worry about.

Any animal that dies can cause an ammonia spike in the tank. It's more of a problem with smaller systems. If this is in a 120 then I wouldn't worry too much. My sea hare will disappear for a day or two but always turns up. Sometimes he's right in front of me but it blends in so well.
I would not keep it if your HA is all gone. |

This sea Hare is more grey then brown. He looks like Shrek...
Do they ONLY eat green hair alagae? It actually looks like hes eating the sand and its coming out the hole on his back...lol

Might Be a Cucumber
Hi WaterssretaW,
I have both sea cucumbers and a sea hare in my tank. If he is eating the sand and it is coming out the "hole" in his back, I think that he is a sea cucumber rather than a sea hare. |

Recently, I had just gotten a black sea hare which disappeared and probably died. A few week later I got a serious algae bloom. My two fish- a royal gramma and a tomato clown and the few corals I have seem ok. If your system is large enough, it should be able to absorb the loss of one critter.
