A question for CPR Bak Pak users

I need to replace my pump.

It came with a Rio 600RVT but does it work better with the Rio 800RVT?

By the way, you'll need a venturi conversion kit. They're usually around $4 online.

You'll see better results with the MJ1200. Some even do mods on the mj1200.

A quick questions about the CPR...

I was thinking of adding a mesh bag of carbon into a new setup that I am planning. The mesh bag of carbon will be set in the return area of the CPR where regulary you would have that blue plastic stuff.

Does anyone add carbon or anything else directly into the chamber of a CPR. If so what are you adding and how has it worked. If not, Why??

Go with the Accela pump. PA sells them. I use it on my sons tank. It's night and day from the Rio. The only problem I ran in to was the impeller broke on it. Not sure why it broke so quickly.....

The maxijet 1200 is the way to go. You can modify the intake with an airline tube just before the impeller and voila you have a venturi.

I second the Accela pump. Great upgrade to the CPR BakPak.

I don't see how adding media to the return chamber could make you run the risk of overflowing your tank. I used a bag of carbon in that chamber for years when I used a Bakpak with no problems at all. If the bag blocked anything, it would be water leaving the skimmer. I guess it is possible that it could cause the skimmer to overflow, but not the tank.

I run a media bag of GAC in the return chamber of my bak pak. Yes, you can clog the return and yes it will over flow your skimmer...been there done that...What I do now is I use a small mag float to hold the media bag in place so it is not able to float up and clog the return. Works like a charm and have not had a problem since. I also keep one of my heaters in the return chamber as well.

I bought the accela pump for my bak pak and found it to be, in my opinion, too powerful for the bak pak. Water flowed through the skimmer much to quickly, not allowing the air bubbles enough to time to dissipate. This caused a micro bubble problem that never went away. On top of that the pump vibrated much more and would rattle very loudly. I had a maxi jet 600 laying around and have been using that with great results. I just used the the venture fittings that came with the accela pump and it was good to go.
