it looks like a filter sponge of some sort... strangest spot i have seen one.

Maybe it's common. I have a couple of emerald crabs with sponge growing on them as well. Probably picked a piece up somewhere in the rocks and it just grew. Looks like yours picked up a pineapple sponge.

I have a few that look like balls of lint crawling around my tank... They keep my tank clean, but I am assuming that they cant reach their back to get the goodies off of themselves .

it is a cuetip sponge just a filter feeder, you can pluck them off really easily if you want but it is kinda funny

Bizzar!

I thought they might be some sort of parasite, there is even a small one starting to grow on its leg. At this rate its going to end up a walking sponge, the poor fella!

Next molt, he'll be clean and clear, so no worries about him getting overrun with sponges. That's kind of cool, actually!
