BIG crab!! pics
Hi
New tank and new rock, whilst installing the rock I came across this guy, managed to net him and he is now in the sump. Should I keep him in the sump or is this something I can chance in my reef tank? Its about 2 inches across Last edited by Fingers68; 05/02/2009 at 04:16 PM. |

I would say Xanthidea (actaeodes tomentosus). Keep him out of your display.

Yep, definately get him out of your display - not a friendly fella. I found a bunch of these on a couple hundred pounds of live rock I got.

Most crabs are nocturnal. Some eat fish, some eat corals, others are scavengers or filter feeders. You really won't know if he's fish or coral safe until it's too late.
I'd banish him to the sump. |

I have one identical in my tank. I've seen it "maybe" three times in the past 5 years, normally when moving rock around. I'm not losing fish or anything else so doubtful he's harmful, but the sump might be the best place for yours.

Its a Xanthid crab. They are bad I just cought one and had to get then out of the display. Mabby you can keep him in the sump but these guys can be trouble for fish & corals. I just cought one of my own last week, I have him in a spare tank with little water and no flow and hes still alive. I hate to kill a creature of the sea but sometimes they have to go! heres the crab I cought a crab with red eyes like them has to go!
