Sump

I have had my tank running for 7 months and I feel that a mojr mistake was not setting up a sump. I still am confused though how to set one up. Any advice on a design in a 10 gallon tank. What parts dp I need? Also Can I still run my fluval 405 on my sump because I keep all my media in there. What things would you put in the sump? Besides equipment and Chaeto.

You would need a hang on back syphon sytle overflow. They scare the heck out of me, so unless you plan on drilling your tank for an internal overflow I would stick with what you have.

If you do end up with a sump, the biggest advantage is you can hide the skimmer/heater(s)/probes,etc. in there and the water level in the tank will not drop because of evaporation (the sump level will drop instead).

I like the idea of a sump much better; and the bigger the better.

You can add a much better skimmer, put your heater there, as well as run your fluval. It will really clean up your tank as well as add water volume to your system which will make it more stable. HOB overflows have been around for years and have worked just fine on countless tanks when maintained properly.

The hob fuge you noted is better than nothing, but I'd still go with a sump if I had the choice.
