Since I have never built a sump before (noob-alert ), why is a bigger return area better?

A bigger return area is better because with more water in that section you won't have to worry about the pump running dry as often.

As the water in your tank evaporates, it won't be noticed in the main tank, but in the sump. In turn, it will be really noticed in the return section of the sump, so the bigger that area, the less you have to top off.

exactly what toddrtrex said. Even with an ATO, it's not a bad idea to have a sizable return area, just in case your ATO pump fails.

OK cool. Thanks for the advice. My Reef Octopus skimmer will be here on Monday and I will adjust accordingly. Just put together my new stand:
