Mrs. Wages pickling lime. you can find it in many grocery stores, or in WalMart in the kitchenware section near the canning jars. almost the same as the stuff packaged for the hobby but lots cheaper

from what I read http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2005-01/rhf/index.php the 'usable' part of kalkwasser stays suspended in the water, and all the impurities that are not needed is what settles on the bottom. So the finished product is the same thing, just some brands have less impurities than others

from what I have heard the pickling lime is kind of hard on the impellers on your pumps. You might have to ask someone who uses it though. It also might be worth it with the money that you save to just replace the impeller from time to time.

Thanks for the info about the potential pump damage. I'll be sure to use a separate container to dose/drip.
