how tall to make sump baffles? bubble trap on fuge end??

I am moving my 150gallon tank next weekend (all glass with two overflows). While it is apart I am going to up grade my 30 gallon sump.

I just got a 55 gall tank which is 48X12X21. I plan to put refugium on one end, return pump in center, and skimmer on the other end. I do not have a skimmer yet so I can't design the sump around a skimmer. My other skimmer was HOB it was too small for the 150 so I am going to get a new one.

I figure I can make the skimmer section pretty deep and build a stand for the skimmer to have it functioning at the correct depth.

So the question is how deep??
I will have room to raise the skimmer up and down if needed. The display tank is about 4 -4.5 feet off the ground.

Also do I need a bubble trap on the refugium end ? I plan to use egg crate to keep stuff out of the pump. Wil the egg crate break up the bubbles?

8-10" is common for skimmer depth. The only area of concern you might run into would be the width of the 55g only being 12" from front to back. Might limit your skimmer search for your system, but I'm sure you'll find something that will fit.

If I'm understanding your design correctly this is what you want to do. It's a fairly straight forward design.

Yes that is exactly what I plan to do.

Just wasn't sure how deep to make the sections.

I plan to have one over flow drain into the skimmer area, and one overflow drain into the refugium area.

Does anyone think 12 inch would be too deep for the skimmer and a fuge sections? If I went with only 10 inches that still leaves like 7 inches of wasted space. I am pretty sure it wont flow that much back into the tank during power outage.

I take it; the reason for making it deeper is so that you can squeeze as much water volume as you can? Or is it convenience of accessing the collection cup (by putting the skimmer on a stand in deeper water)? As long as you have enough space to collect all the water from the DT during a power outage or turning the return pump off, than you can do it.
