are you going to run your carbon in bags or in a reactor?
by RO unit, are you planning on getting RODI, because you should containers to mix saltwater in also you are going to need lots of misc. plumbing pieces and glue

A quality RO system is one of the most important parts of the home aquarium, and certainly the most important when first setting up/filling a new tank...
What size tank, and can you specifically name what the equipment is? Then we can suggest the right powerhead. |

sorry i just realised i missed your second statement about carbon, how are you planning on installing the bag/ where abouts in the system? and a ro system is fine, but id suggest you get a di with it

My aquarium is a rectangular 50 gallon.
I was planning on sliding the activated carbon in betwine to walls of acrylic sheets in my sump were the water is most likly to travel though most of the time. |

well you still didnt say what your intended future stock would be, however id suggest 2 k3s for a basic 50 gallon, it should be ok for soft corals with 1 or 2 sps in the future if your lighting is adequate.
im a tunze fan myself, not sure if a couple of tunze nanos would be too much for you or not though, im assuming you have a decent return pump from your sump, if not the tunzes may well be fine for your system.

Some powerheads can be connected to various types of equipment as pumps, but when they're being used as powerheads, they're usually not connected to anything. Their purpose is to push water around the tank. Many corals need flowing water to bring nutrients to them and blow wastes away.
In your case, since you will have a sump, the return pump might provide most of the water movement you need. It can still be a good idea, though, to add a couple of powerheads. They'll help to break up the flow from the return pump, and add some healthy turbulence to the tank. There are two basic types of powerheads, impeller and propeller. The impeller-type has been used for decades as a water pump. The rotating impeller is concealed inside the unit, and the flow comes out through a nozzle. Because the flow is constricted, it's very uniform and one-directional, or laminar. This is the same type of pump that will probably be in your protein skimmer, and your return pump will likely be one of these. Lots of companies have been making this type of powerhead for many years. The other basic style of powerhead is the propeller type. These tend to look like a boat propeller in a cage. The water flows out of them in a wide, turbulent stream. They've become very popular in the last few years, and several companies are now making them.

im curious where you read that DI is "just a waste of money"?
the point of an RODI system is to take all the total disolved solids (TDS) out of your tap water so that you can replace the evaporated water with nice clean water for your fishes and corals. a RO system alone will lower your TDS some, but the DI part will (should) take it down to 0 (zero), which is perfect!
