LED floodlight for refugium? Pic.
Has anyone used the new LED floodlights for refugium lighting? I looked everywhere for lighting and every CFL I found was 2700K ( home depot, Canadian tire), but found this at Walmart. It says 65K in the model number and is a bright white light.
model number 2003LEDP38-65K from Lights of America I should be good/even better with this for cheato? edit: here is the link to the site, just found it, says its 6500K , so im good there, is it powerful enough though? http://www.lightsofamerica.com/en/Pr...EDP38-65K.aspx Last edited by sebrofjr; 06/11/2009 at 05:42 PM. |

costco has similar lights i was considering trying. might be worth a shot. only burning 5 watts of electric would be terrific!
how visually bright are those bulbs? i have not seen one powered up. |

This is about how much light I'm getting. the picture is basically 1 to 1 with all light off in the fish room. It's definitely not as much as the 2700K 26 watt CFL, so I'm a little concerned.

I love this line in the specs: "Lumens: N/A"
It'll probably work - try it for a month and then tell us. FWIW, I'm guessing the LEDs in that thing are moderate output at best. It would be interesting to take one apart and try to ID them. You could DIY a LED 'fuge light that would likely be many times more powerful, with about the same power consumption, for about $35 - $40 US, so not much more than that cost. Have you ever run that 'fuge with another light? I wouldn't be too worried about using a 2700k bulb, since I would guess it probably peaks in the colors that chaeto likes, anyways. We're used to trying to get really high k bulbs for our corals, but macroalgae have pretty different tastes than corals.

Its a brand new fuge setup, so I was trying to get the best possible. following ratings from here http://www.melevsreef.com/fuge_bulb.html
The 2700K from that test had very little growth. |

I appreciate the information on that page, but IMHO it's really impossible to equate results from one make and model of bulb to another, since color ratings aren't exactly implemented in a standard fashion.
