65 gal. display tank, 29 sump/fuge?
i am getting ready to start a 29 gallon sump/fuge and am trying to get some opinions on waterflow. I am not sure which return pump to use to get the right amount of flow of course you can trow in a ball valve here and there to control return and drain flows but i wanted to see what you guys say about what pumps to use i was going to use a submersible if i can as that is how my sump/fuge is designed to have the output in the center skimmer on the drain side and fuge on the opposite side. Also any skimmer ideas would be helpful i was looking at buying a MSX from marine solutions but wasnt sure what size would be best for my application with medium bioload no sps.
Thanks Eric

A mag 5 would be a nice size pump for that. @ 3 ft your looking at around 300 gph, which is good for a fuge.
Skimmer wise, any reputable brand wont let you down. Octo's are also a nice price, which can be modded to run well.

I hope it never catches on, I like having the oldest tank on here and I don't have to worry about calcification, bio pellets, Vodka dosing, DSBs, Chaetomorpha (I don't even know what that is) Carbonite hardness and all of these other things many people worry about. If I had to think about all of that stuff I would get a stroke. My test kit came in a wooden box and the directions say to keep in a cool chariott. I throw some food in the tank, wave hello to the fish and go out with my wife and have a nice glass of merlot with dinner. Have a great day but most of all, have fun. -PaulB Current Tank Info: 27 Gallon DAS softy/fish reef |

+1 on the Octopus Skimmers. The new 2009 models dont really need to be modded. I use the 150. I have a 70G, almost same dimensions as you and use an Ocean Runner 2500 for return. I highly recommend it. Bulkreefsupply has the best pricing on them right now by a mile.

I have a 65 gallon tank and I have a Rio 3100. I know some people don't like them but I have had mine running 24/7 for over 3 years. I clean it once a year and I have never had a problem. And the flow rate is just about perfect for my set up. It comes with a small ball valve that attaches to the output. I throttle it back just a hair and its perfect. I am very happy with it, just 1 for you to think about.

Thanks for all the feedback so far. Also any overflow boxes better than others or is an overflow box an overflow box?
Thanks again Eric

You will sleep much better at night if you drill it. I recommend the kits from glass-holes.com. If you have to use an overflow box get a lifereef. Eshops (sp) is cheaper but I have no experience with it. Do not under any circumstances get a CPR....or any other type of overflow box that requires an additional pump to keep it from failing.
