Video of me Fishing my Engineer Goby Out

My engineer goby has been shifting sand much more than I expected. As a result, a lot of nasties (PO4) have been released and I've got some hair algae. I've been procrastinating pulling him out - no way to catch him, trap won't fit, etc. So, I finally got my fishing pole out and fished him out. In the sump for now.

Check out the vid.

WTG, I have always heard that worked. Nice to actually see it. I may have to get a yellow tang out of my tank as he is getting to big for my 65. I was told back 3 years ago this would be fine, but I think he is getting to big. If I can get him I am going to give him to my friend with a 156g.

What kind of hook did you use? A small trout hook?

Yup, used a very small aberden hook. The engineer goby has a larger mouth than the other fish, though. For a YT, you may need to go with a really small hook.

Btw - he's doing fine right now in my frag tank.

Great video and great job getting him out. Just a word if anyone is going to do this, which in my mind is very ethical and leads to less stress.

Make sure you bend the barb down. This will allow the hook to just slide out and leave a very small hole in the mouth.

Again, great video dme330i and thanks for sharing with us.

Great point, Mike. I actually removed the barb - you have to keep tension on the line for it to work. Thus, the use of an actual rod.

Also, don't let the fish swallow the bait. You need to set the hook right away to avoid any stomach damage from a complete swallowing.
