aptasia, can i take rock out to kill it?
Can i just take the rock out that its on an somehow kill it? I was thinking about returning the rock to get a different one. Or should i just buy aptasia x. I just dont want an aptasia problem after few weeks they are steadily getting a little bigger, but still kinda small. hmmm. suggestions?

I use a needle, and I haven't found one I couldn't kill. You actually have to pierce the nem though.

about 2 weeks ago someone posted a video of them removing the rock and hitting them with a propane torch to kill them. I guess I would do that too if I didn't have everything aquascaped already.
However I too inject with boiling hot water. Seems to work the best for me.

I just take the syringe and "pointed end" from a used up test kit (( see picture below )), and fill it up with some Kalk paste and inject the aptasia/its hole. For me, 95% of the time I only have to do it once.

you have to make sure you kill it dead,,or let it be,,because they will divide if mutilated. for me i have found it best to let them be and try to make sure they dont get any food. that method caused the few in my main display to either die or move to the sump

I have used both........they seem to work almost everytime. Once in a while I have to give a 2nd squirt.

If you can see the specific aptasia you want to kill, burn it.
If I can easily remove the rock that has aptasia on it I burn it using a lighter. Rinse it off under the tap real quick to remove any char, and plop it back in the tank. I read this technique a long time ago on a forum similar to this, and have never had any ill effects in the past 8 years of doing it. When you have a big tank with established rock you need to use some of the white chemical stuff, but if you can easily take the rock out of the water, the cheap and effective way to combat aptasia is the ancient method of searing it clean. |
