I have the same thing going on in my tank.... fighting with nitrates right now and think I am gonna leave lights off for a few days.
Help!!!!!!

It's cyano. Don't leave the lights off - excess lighting is not your problem, excess nutrients (and not enough flow) is. Solve the root, don't band-aid it by choking out the light to your tank, or else you'll constantly struggle with other nutrient issues.

dont use antibiotics or algaecides if any of your fish stores suggest it. DONT! you will just end up with a resistant strain

Agreed it should be used as a last resort. however higher flow in those areas may fix the problem.

+1 on more flow. I had this about 4 weeks into my cycle and higher flow rates to the area completely got rid of it.

It's believed that dosing vodka promotes the growth of cyano. That's why we try to find that perfect medium and not dose too much to promote cyano growth but enough to keep the nitrates and the phosphates down.
