Have you tried this surface skimmer filter
Hey, I was looking at this filter. I have poor surface skimming and flow in the new tank. I wanted to add a power head. But then i found this. This is Skimmer filter with filter pad and two flexable outlets. This looks really cool. It would be an adition to hang on back filter with protien skimmer and bioballs. I have that oily film on top of water and some algea issues from poor water to fill the tank, I have since got RODI. Does this unit have enough power. Have you ever seen this used. Will is increase flow in my tank, I only have one small powerhead now.
Is this good or junk??? http://www.drsfostersmith.com/produc...&pcatid=18381x |

I use a Tunze 6025 aimed at the surface, no more oily film on the top. That's on my son's 33 gallon tank

I've used pre filters on skimmers before with not much luck. I think they are more of a gimmick personally. I do the same as moondoggy and keep a healthy amount of surface agitation going to keep the proteins circulating in the water column. That way the skimmer has more of a chance at pulling them out of the water.
