Waste on live sand

I am moving tanks right now. When I poured the live sand from my previous tank into the tank im setting up, the waste from all the sand has now settled as a top layer. It looks horrible. Any advise?

My advice would be to use new sand, but that's just me.

How old is the sand that you transferred? If it is older than a few years I agree with the above poster, new sand.

syphon it off. you'll lose some sand, but if you can get the hose at the right level, you'll just pull the junk off.
