Angry really? you just dont get it do you?

this guy just came over to my house to check out my tank. i know him through a mutual friend, and his tank recently crashed. i told him to come over and i would give him some help/advice on how to get his tank running smoothly again. he then proceeds to tell me that he has just bought five damsels, two clowns, and a moorish idol. the day he cleaned his tank! i kind of kept that one to myself. he then starts to tell me that he just wants the tank to run without any maintenance for "like five years man, and if the fish just die or something brakes, at least i had it for five years." ok ok i say to him "you know that these fish come from the ocean right?, and that this is a hobby intended to keep the livestock ALIVE!" i just cannot believe his arrogance and ignorance! he kept saying man your tank looks really good how can i get mine to look like that without doing anything. i just wish i could take him away from his home here in boulder, put him into a clear box no bigger than a bedroom, with a bunch of people that he has never even seen, and see how long he can live without me getting him clean air, or changing his water bowl, or ever emptying out his cage. no big deal right? as long as his lives a couple of months its worth the plane ticket right? what a LOSER! arggggggg!

I think we all know "that person". I know there is one in my area, has a nano, always crashing it/killing everything then keeps bugging me for frags of corals and asking the same thing you were asked "How do I make my tank look as good as yours knowing I don't have the money or time to maintain it like you do." ARGH!

Ummm, FW fish maybe? I know quite a few people in my area with 55G FW tanks that have been setup for 5-10 years without ever doing a waterchange, just top offs of tap water and many of them have the same fish they started with. I know one person has just 2 "kissing" fish and a Pleco in his 55G for 8 years straight now and the tank looks great IMO. Never understood how or why but never questioned his success because it was easy enough to see.

I'm surprised based on your environmentally conscious location that some joker would dare say something like this. You'd better be careful saying something like that in Tahoe. If they knew what was going down in the lfs they'd be disgusted. I've had some real good times in Boulder. great town.

Tell him to hire someone to maintain the setup he wants. He's obviously not capable of it.

Just tell him that he can't do it the way he wants it and then compare it to your tank. Keep stressing it to him every time he opens his mouth. One day, he'll either buy the stuff you're using or he change his hobby and won't be bothering you again.

People like that should hire qualified saltwater maintenance people to come and take care of their tank on a regular basis. If they aren't interested in doing any work themselves it would probably end up saving them money.

oh yeah a lot of money, time and it would look so much better. i told him to try fresh water. it just wasnt registering. its like punching a brick wall, or trying to inflate a tire when it is too full. he just doesnt understand that it is not cool to just knowingly kill your fish, or not provide your pets with the proper habitat. he is also one of those guys that thinks he is really smart and wont let you tell him what should be done or needs to be done. he came over here and left without thinking about one thing that i told him.
