Update... At 1 month, the Phoenix appear to be a little less blue than I remember, but that could be a result of how taken aback I was when I first put them in.

The Phoenix still have way more actinic flourescense than the Hamilton's. This is especially apparant when the Phoenix are off and the Hamilton's are on.

My digital camera was stolen on a flight home from Vegas, so no more pics for a while until the airline settles my claim.

Just as a better comparison of lamps with and without VHO. I'm specifically looking for differences in the colors of the coral (flourescing or not).

Remember, at the time I had 760W (8x36") of URI VHO over the tank.

Phoenix 14K

Phoenix 14K + URI Actinic VHO

Hamilton 14K

Hamilton 14K + URI Actinic VHO

Finally, here's another reefer's pics of the new 15K XM lamp with and without PC actinics. Remember, this is a different camera, and I think there's a white balance issue in play on these pictures.

XM 15K

XM 15K + 2x32w PC Actinics

It's really nice that they are getting closer and closer to a one bulb solution (no supplementation needed) that is appealing to the eyes.

Thanks for the update.

Peace,
John H.

Nice pics. I like the look of the Hamilton with the actinics on best. The XM looks nice but is much whiter than I would expect when run without actinics.

I must like it more blue than you Harold. I like the Phoenix without actinics best...

Wowza... raising a thread from the dead!!

Which is better depends on your needs and wants...

Most of the options available today are exponentially better than what was available 10 years ago. Some options from 10 years ago are still regarded as gold standards (VHO actinics for color).

You can find people on the forum who will argue until the cows come home about which is more energy efficient or cost efficient, which has better PAR or color. The best way to make a decision is to meet a bunch of local reefers using the lighting you're considering and see it in person before you decide which to use.

Regarding my personal experience:

Well, in the last 3 years I made the switch from 250W 14K Phoenix DE in ReefOptixIII on a goofy light mover system - to 400W Radium 20K SE in Lumen Max reflectors on a goofier light mover system. Prior to that I had 250W DE 10K's with VHO actinics.

All of the above were good options - plus today you have LED and T5HO. I presonally favor halides for the glitter lines, and the Radiums for color, but check out each technology and decide your own favorite configuration!!

Yes. They are listed on the Marine Depot site. I wouldn't mind trying them..but I'm using an eballast and think they might be too blue and dim. They are also listed for $99.

Had the Hamilton 14K but had a couple of bulbs burnt out after a month so when Ushios 14K (found too yellow), tried XM 20K (way too blue), and now the Phoenix 14K (blue).

I'll probably run the Phoenix for the year then switch back to Hamilton as personally find I like them the best.

I actually have a hammy 14k and phoenix 14k 2x250w hqi's on my tank now.. waiting for another phoenix bulb to come in.

IMHO, the phoenix destroys the hamilton both in terms of brightness and colouration.. colour being a subjective matter of course. The phoenix 14k is close to perfect for my personal tastes, but I still want supplementation to get even more actinic pop.
