smoking and fish

On another forum the question was asked..."Can smoking adversely effect your aquarium?" I was just wondering what you guys' thoughts were on the subject.

I've personally heard it both ways. Nicotien (spelling?) is poisonous to the fish. Then there are the people who smoke and have reefs and have been doing it for forever that say nothing will happen.

Unless it's being put directly into the systen through an air pump or you are constatnly blowing smoke around it, I don't think it would be an issue.

Yes, smoking will kill your fish. But boy is it hard to get those patches to stick to them! lol
p.s. - it'll get you too.............

Look at how carbon dioxide in your home makes it into your tank. While I was away on vacation and the house was empty my PH actually was were it was supposed to be at. Got updates though text on my phone from my controller.

Anything in the air in your home can make it into your tank, and if it's not good for you, its probably not good for them.

smoke from any source (ie: candles to cigarettes etc.) around an aquarium can (and usually does to some degree) have an effect on aquarium inhabitants and (believe it or not) has been the cause of premature death in certain sensitive reef organisms (talking corals here!) in several cases that I've seen.

additionally, smoke has an adverse effect on skimmer performance.

Most fish begin smokimg as juvies - Dont let them start and keep all matches out of their fins

i just quit smoking as well..best decision i ever made..the only way i could see it harming them is if you had nicotine on your fingers and went into the tank..-drew

I think your biggest concern would be if your fish get addicted to cigarettes, they will have a very difficult time trying to quit. Perhaps there is a "fish patch".

We had a customer once that had chronic problems with Ph. One day when we were testing the water- you could smell the smoke in the water! Wasn`t hard on the fish- other than the Ph. We had them use a airline to outside for the skimmer, and cover the tank and sump. The Ph problem went away after that.

I guess people can't behave enough to leave this open. What a shame.
