calling the tang police

i have 4 tangs in a 200gal tank.
they (yellow, yellow-eye, ble hippo, sailfin) are all friends.
i want to add a vampire tang.
it seems a different enough shape to avoid conspecific war.

any opinions?

Even with 4 tangs it looks pretty maxed out. As you never know with tangs they can fight...

Is vampire tang another name for Lt. tang (Acanthurus tennenti)?

Seems like it would be pushing it to me.

I beg to differ I have witnessed a friend with tons of tangs in his tank that get along just fine actually they swim and thrive very peacefully... Its hit or miss with them and how well certain tangs that u get whether or not they will get along.... he has over 20 tangs in his system

wel tangs shoal in the wild so that would make sense it more of the groups of two or three tangs that are the same cause they see each other often enough to where they get territorial

Tangs of different species do not shoal together in the wild. That being said, what are the dimensions of your 200? I have a 200 Deep Dimension and would have no problem with your stocking list. I currently have a Purple Tang and Lavender Tang, along with a mated pair of Blue Jaw Triggers. I'd not hesitate to add a 3rd Tang to my system.

I wouldn't add another tang to you system. just because one person shoves a ton of tangs in a tank doesn't mean it will work for any extended period of time.

I'm certainly no tang expert, but I would think talking about adding a 3rd tang (though 5th large fish) may be a different story than adding a 5th tang.

I have seen tanks stocked full of tangs as well. There does seem to be a saturation point that tangs stop fighting. I have heard some people speculate that the tang is just overloaded and stops feeling territorial. The systems seem healthy though. I wouldn't reccomend everybody try that. FOr every tank I have seen like that, I hear about a dozen that adds one more tang and chaos ensues.

And again I restate I am no expert and am only speculating

I was taking into account that I have 2 Blue Jaw Triggers, which more than equal the bioload of 2-4 tangs...lol. As for aggression, you're probably right.

i have no concerns over bioload, nor space
(the tank is about 7x2x2 ft).

the issue is, i think, simply one of aggression
(and conspecific aggression at that).

nevertheless,i have decided that i love the pack of tangs
i have now and how they follow each other around.
i don't think i want to change or stress that.

so i'll pass on the new tang.

thanks for the inputs.
