What is the minimum clearance for MH?

I have a shallow canopy on a 185 gal (60x30x25) and really want 250 MH fixtures. From water to the top of the canopy is 10". If this won't work is T5 the best option. I want to be able to have SPS - Mixed reef tank.
Thanks!

I have 2 250w MH and they are about 8 or 9" from the top of the water. I have no problems and My tank doesn't go over 78 and I have it set at 76

I have 2 250 hqi pendants about 4 inches off the water on my 55 gallon. I also have a shallow canopy, I dont have a problem with water temp either. I have a fan mounted on my canopy and my tank stays right around 81.
