Is your standpipe screwed in, cemented in, or just set in your overflow bulkhead ?

Mine is just pushed in snugly. It's like that so that I can remove it for servicing should I need to.

Just slip in snugly as others have said. Since the connection between your pipe and bulkhead is underwater, there is no good reason to use thread or cement. Of course, on the other side you have to use either thread or cement.

You're all right. I just placed mine in the bulkhead and to my surprise the overflow box didn't drain! wow amazing. However I still sized the sump to hold the overflow box water volume, just in case. Sure comes in handy to clean the overflow. Just pull up the pipe, let the water drain, replace pipe.

Very smart in including that volume. If it sits long enough it will most likely drain. But not in a short period. I did one wrap of plumbers tape.

Don't make the mistake of gluing. I did and had a problem and had to replace the bulkhead, riser pipe and went through a lot of trouble just because I glued when I should have been pushin'

Definitely push in, and not too hard... so when that six line wrasse (or other escape artist) winds up in your overflow box, you can just hold a net or filter sock at the sump end, pull the standpipe, and flush that sucker right back into your grips!

The general conscensus seems to be to not glue and I couldn't agree more. There have been multiple occasions where it is necessary to get the stand pipe out of your tank for a minute. It would get somewhat annoying to have to remove the entire bulkhead every time you want to service the pipe.

mine is screwed in but i can unscrew it by hand so kind of best of both worlds i guess.

Careful you don't loosen that bulkhead when you unscrew it.
