Sump flow through requirement question
I am trying to figure out how much turn over in GPH I need for my 56 gallon in the sump. I have Bubble Mangus NAC6 skimmer that will go in a minimum 10 gal sump with a HOB overflow. Basically I need to figure out how big the return pump needs to be.

I would go with about 5 times turnover thru the sump or roughly 280gph after headloss is taken into consideration. There is a headloss calculator on the home page of Reef Central that may help you.

I shoot for 3-5x turnover through the sump. Also, I would look into a bigger sump than a 10g, youll be happy when you start addinf more equipment. Id look into a 20l or something even bigger.

The bigger the sump, the more volume there is to slow the water veloticty and allow the detritus you worked very hard to get down there......to stay down there.
Sumps vary with personal preference, so don't get too hung up on it, and realize you can adjust things later on.

Thanks for the input guys I realize bigger is better with sumps but I do have cabinet space issues. I'm definitely going for the biggest one I can fit and keep the canister filter I am currently running.

Maybe you should be looking at loosing the canister filter to make for room.

Don't forget to make it tall enough.....you want to have the most water while running, but leave enough volume when the pump is turned off when the water comes back down.

I've got a 10 gallon sump for my 45 and I ended up useing a 750gph return throttled down with a ball valve. I'm using a 600 gph HOB overflow
