filter socks again

I noticed that when my filter sock gets near full (every 4 days) it'll hold so much water that my top off line shows a lower water level. It makes it hard for me to know how much to top off. What do you do? Does this happen to anyone else?

For me it's not a problem. In the rare case it gets that bad, the water just spills over the top of the sock.

spilling over the top is not the problem. The water is in the sock rather than the sump and it affects my water level line. End up maybe topping off too much and lowering salinity. The water is 3-4 inches above water level when the sock is full.

Seems to me the best answer in that case is to swap you sock out, let the water levels settle and then do your top-off. The sock won't "last" much longer without a cleaning anyway right?

Your other option would be moving the sock lower into the sump.

filter socks arent worth the trouble. i just use them when i plan on stirring things up a bit to get the extra detritus out of the tank.

I mainly use them when I do some cleaning to trap any large particle. otherwise I leave them off.

Just curious, but for you guys that don't use filter socks all the time how does your water in the DT look? And how about your sump? Does it get really dirty or do you clean it frequently?

I might be wrong but 3-4 inches above the water line in the filter sock would be roughly 200-300ml of water (depending on the sock diameter).
On 150 gallon tank it will not change salinity significantly. Check our this calculator

Of course, changing the sock would be my first choice.

Just drain the water from the sock, clean it, and let evaporation take care of the rest. Unless you're running a 5 gallon tank you shouldn't have a problem with sg.

This was most helpful, thank you. I do change the sock when it gets full. I was just trying to maximize the sock's capacity.

i have twice the amount of socks i need. i always change every 3 to 4 days. my water clarity has been a lot better since i added the socks. the more i can clean the water of the tank the better.(socks, carbon, vodka, skimmers)IMO

Just buy enough socks so that you can change them out long before they begin to clog. By the time they start backing up, they're dumping nitrate into the tank. I change mine out pretty much every day and wash them on the weekend.

I change mine daily and hang them up over the sump until the water drips out. I keep two weeks worth before washing them all at once. I had issues with them overflowing a lot (even prior to 24 hours) but fixed that by raising the sock out of the water higher.

Filterbag.com - a member in our club just ordered 25 of them. It should last you for a while (or you could sell it to some local buds).
