What size overflow for 40B?
I'm leaning towards ordering an overflow kit from glass-holes.com, and would love some input on what size to get for my 40 breeder (maybe 700gph?)
I love the idea of the small footprint of their overflows, but I'm wondering if that small footprint would provide enough surface skimming? |

That's what I have on mine. My pump runs around 600gph and I wouldn't have done anything differently

700 is more than enough.
but i would not go any small. its nice to have extra room in case u top off from your display tank or u stick you hand in there etc.. |

Anyone else have any opinions about the surface-skimming issue? |

I have a 700gph HOB overflow with about the same footprnt as the glass holes, and it skims the surface perfectly I run a mag 5 return pump with about 4ft of head.

I agree the 700 is enough. I have overkilled my 40b with the dual 1.5 inch outlet 1500gph glass-holes kit.
I run it now with a gen-x-30 with a lot of head loss, so the overflow is running less than 1/2 capacity but I have lots of surface skimming. ![]() |

I bet that will be more than enough. I have a 300 gph eshopps box, and it does a fine job of turning over the water and keeping the surface pristine.
