MH and Bleaching

I have 39gal with a few corals, brain and soft corals. We have 175 watt metal halides about 7 inches above the tank and run them for about 9 hours. Before we started shielding the brain, it started to shrivel up a bit. We think the lights are too intense. Any ideas of what we can do so that we are able to have coral on the top one quarter of the rock work? Would some sort of film over the light lessen the intensity?

Don't run the light for so long at first. 3-6 hours if you are changing. Yes MH can be to intense. For coral on the top get some SPS that need lots of light. and raise the light. 12" would be more than enough. I have a couple of tanks. One is a 29G with a 250 watt HQI. There are some things that I just can't keep because there is so much light. Be a smart consumer. Also check your temp. MH can really heat up your tank. How is your temp?
