Color Shift of Metal Halide Bulbs

I have been using 10K metal halide bulbs for a while and I was just given used 14K bulbs to see if I like them. The bulbs are 6 months old and I love the look so I think that I will stick with that color for a while. I beleave that I will have enough PAR dispite the time degridation.

As I read ablout these 14Ks around the net, I find that many hobbyests change out their bulbs when they start to see the beginings of hair aglae growth on their rock. I use a well build Algal Turf Scrubber so and I never have any algae that grows on the rock. This incluces under these new/used lamps.

If algae growth on the rock is not a concern, couldn’t I save money by just taking the used bubls off of my friends hands? It seems be too good to be true so I’m sure that it’s not. What other consiterations should I be thinking about besides PAR degridation?
