is it safe to slowly add newer sand to and already established tank until the right depth is achieved---when i first set-up my tank, i added more sand about three months later, then six months later, now four months from the six month i would like to add more---will i be ok

Absolutely. Do it a few cups at a time though. Best bet like I did was put your sand in a ziplock bag and sink it slowly with tank water to the bottom. Then turn it over and pour it out. This will avoid a sand storm. Use your fingers to lightly blendthe sand a bit to seed the new with the old.
