well theres no need to clean sand really, in saying that i do vaccuum mine occassionally with a siphon, and a turkey baster is a great bit of kit for keeping debris off live rock, this is if its in the tank, if its dry and out of the tank then the sand can be washed through in a bucket and the rock scrubbed.

1) Im not sure if there's a way to really clean sand 100%. I tried. Removed all sand from my tank and rinsed it over and over and over until the runoff water was pretty clean. sand looked pristine. put it back into a new tank and still had excess nutrient issues. Removed it all and am now bare bottom and no issues. Now, it could've been a number of things that caused excess nutrients, but I was pretty sure my sand was still dirty.

2) I just finished cleaning my rock - see this thread here http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/sh....php?t=1587539

yea, thats one thing I didnt do - a vinegar wash woulud def help. just make sure, before you put it in your tank, to put it in some tank water by iteself and see if it changes the PH and stuff.

yes. If there is not much vinegar it won't melt much, but that is the old way to test if sand is calcium based

just put it in a bucket and wash it through, and keep emptying the cloudy water, eventually the water will stay clear and the sand will be clean

either throw it away and get new or better yet go BB with starboard, it's a lot easier to maintain.

BB- Bare Bottom, Starboard is a type of plastic some use to help distribute the LR weight on the bottom glass and prevent breakage, it also allows corraline a easy surface to adhear to and give a somewhat more natural appearance in a barebottom tank.
