Poly Filter Socks

I recently set up a reef ready overflow tank, and put a poly filter sock on my drain line. Within a week it has become almost clogged with some algea and possibly some food. I since have stopped all pumps when feeding , but the sock has turned greenish and still restricts some water flow. I've rinsed it and still have problems with it. Anyone help out with what they do?

filter socks need to be cleaned every 2-3 days, not just rinsed. Washing machine works wonders with a little bleach, then air dry to eliminate the bleach. Unless you are dilegent about cleaning them, they can become nitrate traps quite fast.

thanks, you can really put some bleach in the wash and it will be acceptable to put back in the tank?

yes - stick in the washing machine, but rinse twice. I usually add a little dechlorinator with the last rinse just for extra insurance. Never a problem. And they do keep the water a lot cleaner!
