Post Phytoplankton and Zooplankton together?

Would it be possible to raise Phytoplankton and Zooplankton together in the same tank in order to feed corals or some small fish all in the same tank?

I'm a beginner at aquariums but i've been getting alot of guidance from my very experienced friend and i've successfully kept my 10 gallon tropic/local longisland tank. For my next tank i was thinking of getting a 20 gallon long and growing coral.
Thats when the idea popped in my head, could i have a balance ecosystem including food chain in my tank? I'm wondering if it's possible. What combinations of planktons and corals and fish could i possible have in a tank that size? What equipment would i need since i'm sure using your basic hanging filters would just suck up all the plankton.
