Remove some or all of the rock. Lower the water level drastically. Less water = less escape routes. Fish trap, there are directions here on the site. |

Fish trap with time and patience did the trick for me.
I built my own trap and it has a tube that directs the food into the trap. After awhile the fish learn that at feeding time the food appears in the trap and I can catch any fish in the tank, well at least most any. When I first put the trap in the tank I let it sit there for a couple weeks before I even thought about trying to catch anyone. Once the fish were used to it it took no time when I started putting food in there. The biggest problem after that is trying to single out one individual in the trap at a time.

My devil jewel damsel is so smart. He/she refuses to go into my trap after 10 days of starvation. I am still waiting for the chance to catch it .................

I've always had success in coaxing fish into a large container (could use a net but I don't like those to much) with food ( or a net and my hand) and scoop them up.

I use a net and feed in the net. It takes al ong time and you only get one or two chances but it does work for me.

Try doing it without removing anything first, I have caught some aggressive fish after the lights had been off for awhile,

It is too much work to remove the rocks as I have corals on them. I used a large net while feeding before but he/she stayed away from it. Right now, I left my trap ( a large plastic jar) in the tank hoping that he/she gets familiar with it.

I use a cheap clear glass vase with a narrow neck and wide bottom
with a piece of fishing line tied to the neck. I lay it on its side and leave it for a week then every day for the next week I squirt some brine shrimp in with a baster when the fish I want is eating I pull up the string the fish will instinctively swim down. I haven't missed yet |

Get a clean brute container. Siphon the water out of the tank until there's very little left. The corals will be fine in a temporary low tide. The fish will be easy to net in a small amount of water.
Gently put the water back without stirring up the sandbed. This method saves trauma to you and the fish.
