TDS meter
Anyone know of a good reasonable TDS meter to get and where? Also, is it really necessary to have one, or just an additional tool in the "tank" so to speak of?

Well you won't use it on your tank, it is used to test your RO/DI water, to see when filters might need to be changed.
Check on eBay, there are a bunch of different ones in every price range, that where I got mine. HTH Good luck

As always, is there one more recommended. If I decide to purchase one I want to make sure its accurate, yet reasonable but not cheap (isn't this always the case).

They range from about 20 bucks to over 100. To be honest I am just as happy with my "pen style" TDS meter as I am with my in-line TDS meter. They both usually give the exact same readings. I would buy one from a reputable filter seller (air water and eyes, filterguys, etc.) and you can pick any from their selection. Going up in price generally means added features (such as in-line, for example). If you want something simple, like a pen, there is no reason you cannot get that. The pen style CAN have false readings if you contaminate the electrode, but it really isn't hard to clean/calibrate.

Bulkreefsupply sells a nice dual inline TDS meter for about $30. This way you can test after your RO and then again after your DI so you know when to switch out specific filters.
