2 Tunze 6045's or 1 Vortech MP20???

72 gallon bowfront (48" wide), LPS/Softies, no SPS yet.

Is that all your going to use for flow? If so get the MP40, the 20 won't be enough to make it to the other side of the tank. Your SPS will thank you. The Vortechs are nice, they have a built in wavemaker in the controller the Tunze must be purchased seperately.

Unfortunately the MP40 is not in the budget right now. With that in mind, would I be better off buying the MP20 and upgradeing it down the road or go with the two Tunzes. Right now the only flow is my return pump (Velocity T4).

No SPS in the tank at this time only softies / LPS.

VORTECH tunes are ugly looking in the tank. the vortech has some great flow patterns too.

If you don't mind a good bit of noise, Vortech's can be great pumps. If you like silent pumps, then get Tunze. I've used both and like both.

Good to know thanks, I'm actually trying to quiet my tank. Are the Vortech's annoying loud? My tank is in the living room with the TV, my wife might have an issue with a loud pump...

The vortechs are not that loud. The only time they are pretty noticable is when they are turned up to a higher rate of flow. 50% and below is pretty silent for the flow your getting.

But I also do not think one MP20 is enough. I have a 65g with one MP10, one MP40, two Koralia 2's, and one Koralia 3. Plus a ehiem 1262 for return.

Buy the Mp20 and a few cheap used Koralias, then upgrade the 20 to a 40 when it fits your budget.

Enjoy is correct that they are more noisy when the flow is turned up.

However, I find most people do not set them at a low flow, but rather program the pumps for varied flow in which they do ramp up.

I was able to hear them clearly from the living room, down the hall, and inside my bedroom, even with the door shut, lol. I'm not even kidding. Of course that is at night when everything else is dead silent.

They make a "whirring" noise when they ramp up and it's very audible. This can vary if you don't have it set-up just right. But even when it the pump is in perfect condition, it's a very annoying sound. If your tank is really loud, it's not bad, but if it's quiet, forget it, lol.
